Kombo Magara here, People Partner at Wejo. I started my Wejo journey in February 2020 (just before the pandemic) and I am glad to say that I could not imagine having been in a better place to grow and learn during it. As November marks career month in the US it offered me the perfect opportunity to reflect on my career and figure out how a politics student ended up as People Partner for the world’s leading mobility intelligence company.

Have I got you wondering how it happened yet? Well rather than bore you with my life story I have drilled it down to three key career takeaways. These are: being bold, intentionally collaborating and being responsible.

Be Bold, don’t be afraid to ask for what you want in your career. It’s a big wide world out there and you have to be your own greatest advocate. Early on in my career I learnt that you really could get what you ask for if you are bold enough to ask the right people and are persistent yet tactful. As a graduate this meant that my cohort and I were able to write a business case persuasive enough to convince our Programme Leads to sponsor our attendance at a notable leadership conference. Later in my career the boldness enabled me to ask and take opportunities for management and HR specialist roles even when I was not the conventional candidate for the roles.

Take every opportunity to collaborate. You never know what the collaboration could lead to. Throughout my career I have been intentionally curious taking any and every opportunity to get involved in a project I find interesting. This enabled me to work with people and teams I might never have got to meet. Those were the times when I learnt the most about myself, people, and business. Think of collaboration as a career incubator or a short cut.  If you don’t do it, you are taking the long way round.

Be responsible, never do anything to compromise your values or integrity because you will have to live with that for the rest of your life. My mum has always drummed into me that, what is for you will not pass you by. So, if what it takes to get it is compromising your values, then it’s not for you. In my career this has meant saying no to roles or companies with values that did not align with mine, no matter what the remuneration looked like. It has also meant calling out things as HR professional even when it has been uncomfortable. But I can honestly say, it’s always been worth it for the sake of my integrity.

The irony is not lost on me that these happen to be the Wejo values, I guess the journey has led me right to where I needed to be 😊 . Wejo could be a great place for your career next step, so why not be bold and take a look at our current vacancies.
