As the leader of Wejo’s international privacy framework, Taiwo has oversight over Wejo’s privacy positioning globally. His role means he works in full collaboration with other privacy officers employed by Wejo’s partners and customers around the world, including Palantir and many of the world’s largest auto manufacturers.

Taiwo is incredibly busy as Wejo grows and onboards new partners such as Microsoft and Sompo. Luckily for us, he managed to take some time out of his schedule to answer a range of questions that shed some light on this area.

Q. Hello Taiwo. Tell us more about data privacy at Wejo and the principles that are followed?

Data protection is part of Wejo’s DNA. From day one it has been part of the fabric of the organization and right to this day we have data privacy champions and policies across the business. In our view, privacy is a global right and necessity, and it is something that is constantly evolving. Our commitment to use Data For Good™has helped ensure that Wejo is a global leader in the use of connected vehicle data to improve how we live, work and travel.

All our products are built under the principle of privacy by design. This enables not only compliance with global privacy regulations, but going above and beyond with a wide range of other privacy and regulation guidance from automotive manufacturers and US states such as California.

To find out more about the privacy regulations we follow, watch the video below:

Q. If you were talking about data protection with a motorist concerned about privacy, how would you reassure them?

Connected vehicle data can massively advance transportation safety and improve the in and around vehicle experience. When you put connected vehicle data to work, motorists benefit from much safer and better transport. In short, the power of this data is immense, which is why it’s important to keep it safe. All our ingested data is anonymized, and should motorists change their mind on sharing data, they can opt out. All in all, Wejo can make roads safer without you having to worry about your data being kept secure and private, which we know from our research can be a concern to motorists.

Q. Tell us about your personal ethics and beliefs when it comes to data security and privacy.

I have two strong beliefs here. First is the importance of protected privacy for data subjects, such as drivers and their vehicles. This is a very strong belief of mine. Data privacy legislation is the protection of the individual and Wejo is here to ensure that every individual’s data is protected to the highest degree.

My second belief is the importance of having a meaningful impact. This ensures that transportation safety is improved and that the in and around vehicle experience is improved. And at Wejo we do that every day and we are just getting started, it’s a very exciting time to be helping to drive this at Wejo and it's very important to me that my beliefs align with my employers’, as is the case with Wejo.

Q. Finally Taiwo, if you could sum up data privacy at Wejo in just a few words, what would they be?

It all comes back to the mantra that we have attached to our products and services and is at the heart of everything that Wejo does - and that’s Data For Good™.

This reflects both having a meaningful impact and advancing transportation safety and the overall experience. All are bucketed in protecting privacy. The question isn't why do we us connected vehicle data? The question is, why aren’t we doing more with connected vehicle data? That’s what both myself, and Wejo, are here to do.
