How Smart Mobility Data Can Set Your Infrastructure Grant Application Apart

Wejo joined Geotab ITS and Congaree River Group in a webinar to educate ITS America members on the various grant funding opportunities made available through Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. In this webinar, speakers highlighted how smart mobility data can be useful in winning available Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs).

The Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act (IIJA) has brought billions of dollars in public funding for infrastructure projects. And according to the panelists, any grant opportunity that touches on infrastructure improvements can benefit from connected vehicle data. Some examples of infrastructure projects addressed in the session include:

Supporting EV charging

Several grants that were announced in 2022 focus on advancing the electrification of US roads, and more are expected in the year ahead. Connected vehicle data can help organizations develop metrics-driven programs and grant requests that bring accurate assessments of high-traffic areas which can help identify where charging infrastructure is necessary.

Assisting in congestion relief

Accurate data is critical to securing the millions of dollars of funding available for projects that can reduce congestion and offset the economic and environmental costs of roadways. In addition, connected vehicle data enables organizations to look at pre- and post-project traffic patterns and parking behaviors to support proof of concept and project performance validation.

Improving community safety and resiliency

Historical and real-time traffic data can help traffic planners improve the safety of construction work zones, develop evacuation routes, and assist in re-routing traffic when hurricanes, wildfires, or other natural disasters happen. Gaining a granular understanding of what is happening on the roads, and why incidents are occurring, helps determine how to best address the issue at its source.

Advancing the status quo in transportation

Many grant opportunities encourage eligible entities to partner with the private sector to advance the overall mobility ecosystem with projects such as coordinated automation and intelligent-based sensor infrastructure, smart grids, and traffic signals. Insights generated from connected vehicle data can help validate investment in new technologies.

Having accurate, anonymized, and cost-effective data can be what sets an organization apart in the grant application process. Studies show that data must be inclusive of both commercial and consumer vehicles – something Wejo and Geotab ITS provide by working together.

One recent paper from Purdue University notes, "on interstates, trucks improved the overall penetration of CV to over 6%throughout the day and significantly during the night hours."
