Word from Richard

Welcome again to the Weekly Wrap.

Instances of extreme weather are becoming increasingly frequent all over the world. Tropical storm Henri has just recently battered the US East Coast, causing flooding and disruption across the eastern states, and more can be expected during what’s commonly known as ‘hurricane season’. As well as damaging infrastructure and causing power outages, these storms also carry risks to lives.

It is during these times that Wejo’s Connected Vehicle Data comes into its own, because it can provide more accurate ‘on the ground’ weather conditions than satellite weather predictions, and we’re proud to say that our data has already helped to support the response to major weather events such as Hurricane Sally in 2020. This week, as the US gears up for more challenging weather patterns, we’ve released our Data For Good™ video on Extreme Weather, to show you how our data can help.

I’d like to give a huge thanks here to Dan Tibble and Phrances Perez, two of our experts in data analysis, who appear in the video and helped to put together some of the data represented. In addition, I’d like to thank Sarah Larner, our EVP of Strategy and Innovation, who continues to drive the team to produce even better products, more accurate insights, and outstanding value for our customers.

Handling this data comes with its own responsibility and it’s here that we really want to make our case as a company who can be trusted to keep the data secure and out of the hands of bad actors. The man in charge of leading our data privacy operations is Taiwo Idowu. Understanding the need to conform to data privacy regulations in both Europe and America is no simple task but in Taiwo we have a true expert in the field, and he took time to answer some questions about himself and his role in a video you’ll find below.

Finally, this week we celebrated International Dog Day on our social media channels and shared the pictures of Wejo dogs and their owners. As part of our commitment to make a positive impact in the world, we took the opportunity to make a $1000 donation to Detroit Dog Rescue, a non-profit organization in the Motor City that aims to raise awareness of the homeless and abandoned dog epidemic in the city, and trains and re-homes dogs that they rescue. They were also the first such organization in the city to make a pledge to not kill any dogs. As an organization on the front line doing great things, we find them more than worthy of our donation.

You’ll find links to all the videos mentioned above in the text below, so until next time, thanks for joining and have a great weekend.

Data For Good™: Extreme Weather

Back in September 2020, Wejo’s data was used to support local governments during and after Hurricane Sally hit the US. We truly believe in the power of using Data For Good™ and with extreme weather events becoming a common occurrence across the world, we hope to use our data to save lives and help coordinate solid responses when extreme weather strikes. Find out all about our efforts so far here.

Data Privacy: An Interview with Taiwo Idowu

Wejo’s Privacy Operations Officer, Taiwo Idowu, is tasked with ensuring that the billions of data points that we process are kept secure and away from the hands of those who might use them nefariously. We only believe in the power of using Data For Good™, so understanding the rules and regulations for each market we operate in is essential. Join us as Taiwo talks about his role and the importance of data privacy in this video.

International Dog Day

On International Dog Day, we decided to let our ears down for a short while and celebrate man’s bestfriend. Colleagues from across the business shared pictures of their prized pooches with some fascinating breeds amongst them, including cockapoos, goldendoodles, and a staffweiler. We also took the chance to make a donation to Detroit Dog Rescue, an excellent organization working on the front line with homeless and abandoned dogs. Check the video out on our LinkedIn page here.
