Word from Richard

Welcome to another Weekly Wrap from Wejo.

In this week’s Wrap we’re looking to the stars in more ways than one, and we’ll start with the news that a new space race is underway to enable the vast amounts of data from connected vehicles to be handled in every corner of the earth.

Currently most connected vehicles communicate with cellular networks based on the ground but with only 10-15% of the air surface covered by cellular networks, there remain large ‘cellular deserts’ where a better solution is needed to handle as many as 40 terabytes of data that an autonomous vehicle will produce every hour. Some automakers are already sending satellites into orbit and more are looking at the possibility. Space 3.0 they’re calling it. Fascinating.

A different kind of star is returning to our big screens at the end of September. No Time To Die has been delayed for over a year now and is the last chance to see Daniel Craig taking on the role of the world’s favourite spy, James Bond. I think I’m as eager as everyone to see Bond’s DB5 back in action packed to the fenders with gadgets and guns and the delay has only made the anticipation greater.

The Bond franchise has always been a favourite of mine, not least for the iconic cars he’s driven over the years. Astons, Lotuses, Jaguars, the odd BMW, and even half a Renault, I think we all have one automotive Bond moment that sticks in our mind ahead of all others. Personally, with social distancing still on people’s minds and modern cars more luxurious places to stay than ever, I’d love to see the return of drive-in cinemas, at least here in the UK where they’re not quite as common as in other countries. I’d use the power of connected vehicle data to stream the audio directly into the car and order some snacks too.

Over the last few months, I’m proud to say that Wejo has been rubbing shoulders with a few stars in the media with appearances on CNBC, Bloomberg, the IPO Edge Fireside Chat, and in videos with our partner Palantir. We’re even the subject of a Forbes article looking at the power of connected vehicle data and the role we are playing in enabling that potential, so to celebrate we decided to put together a video of some of the highlights of our media coverage. You can check it out in the links below, it’s a great piece of work.

Finally, we’re looking to the stars and stripes and the MOVE America event taking place in Austin, Texas between September 28th and 29th. This is a big event for Wejo, not least because, after the extended lockdown period, this is our first event in a long time where we will have our own booth, but more so because we will be launching a new product which we believe will move the game on significantly.

If you’re in the area and looking to learn all about how connected vehicle data is being used to make mobility safer, less congested, and more efficient, come visit us at booth #420. You’ll also get the chance to see Bret Scott on a panel discussing the role connected vehicle data can play in road safety, you can pick up some Wejo merchandise, and we’ll even help you save 50% off your ticket with the link in the section below.

Links to all the topics discussed above can be found in the section below so feel free to check them out.

See you next time.

The Space Race for Connected Vehicle Data

Paramount to the universal enablement of autonomous vehicles is the ability to be connected quickly and accurately at all times. Autonomous vehicles can transmit up to 40 terabytes of data per hour, equivalent to what an iPhone may transmit over 3,000 years. This massive demand for complete coverage with ability to move large amounts of data is fuelling Space 3.0 according to experts. You can read all about it here.

No Time To Die Finally Here

No Time To Die, the latest film in the James Bond franchise, will finally be released after an 18-month delay on September 30th. Famous for his quick wit, fast cars, and extraordinary gadgets, the latest film sees the Aston Martin DB5 return once again in fine form, equipped with guns in the headlights. Check out the spinetingling full-length trailer for the movie here.

Wejo In The Media

In recent months Wejo has been featured on CNBC, Bloomberg, Forbes, SPACInsider, and the IPO Edge Fireside chat in recent months, with many more commentators discussing our partnerships with Palantir, Microsoft, Sompo, and General Motors on podcasts and YouTube channels. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, so we decided to put together a video that gathers it all into once place.

Wejo At MOVE America

MOVE America is taking place in Austin, Texas, on September 28th and 29th, and Wejo will be taking the opportunity to launch our latest product at our very own booth. The focus for the event is on the reimagining of mobility and we believe connected vehicle data plays a big part in that, so we welcome you coming to visit us so we can tell you all about it. Bret Scott will be appearing on a panel talking about how CVD can help makes roads safer, we’ll have Wejo goodies available to visitors, and by using this link you can also get 50% off your ticket. There’s almost no good reason not to be there!
