This week’s Wejo webinar focused on the impact of roadworks. We’ve all felt the pain: delays, seemingly pointless lane closures with nobody working on them, driver aggression and security risks. But what really happens when essential maintenance on our roads clogs up our cities for days and weeks on end? We asked our expert team, Daniel, Blaire and Andrew.

Wejo: Daniel, you head up data science at Wejo. What does the job entail day to day?

Daniel: We have a team of data scientists and analysts who use the latest techniques to extract insights from Wejo connected car data. Given that the data asset covers 95% of the US road network emitting data every 3 seconds into the cloud, it’s a bit like being a kid in a candy store. In all seriousness, we support our customers’ data requests and are constantly looking for breakthrough intelligence such as the lane closure analysis discussed on the webinar.

Wejo: Andrew, you spend your time with our customers in the USA. Who do you think can gain from the insights that Daniel’s team produce using Wejo’s unique data asset?

Andrew: The most obvious beneficiaries today are the traffic engineering community. While we’ve been growing fast in this area, we also see increasing demand from construction firms and definitely the smart city communities. Any organization whose business requires smart decisions based on mobility intelligence, is the short answer.

Wejo: Blaire, you’re the marketing leader for Wejo USA. Your job is now marketing lane closure impacts? How does that grab you?

Blaire: Yeah I know right? [laughs] Seriously, contrary to what people might think, this is a marketer’s dream. We are educating the market on the massive, unique impact of connected car data that only Wejo can unleash. We’re doing a series of events like TechCrunch mobility next week and building customer videos that bring real-time insight to the need for our product. I have never been so happy to work this hard!

Wejo: So Daniel what’s next from your team? What are you working on?

Daniel: We’ve just done a whole piece on retail and points of interest. Obviously during COVID the traffic to and from shopping malls, tourist attractions and sports facilities has slowed down but regardless, it’s incredible to see for example how far people travel to and from these locations, and where they go before and after visiting. Using CVD (connected vehicle data) and machine learning techniques we have developed a unique data set of POI (point of interest) and destinations, and the customer demographics and behaviours.

Wejo: Andrew, finally, what next steps do you recommend?

Andrew: Sure, get in touch  andrew.wollet@wejo.com or on LinkedIn. All our customers’ needs are different. Traffic analysis unlocks insights for construction firms, smart cities, retailers and more – happy to talk through your questions and requirements. Thanks!
