Founders, mobility experts and technologists, oh my! We had an excellent time at TechCrunch Mobility 2020. Learned a lot, presented on the main stage and connected with like-minded experts over the two days.

Our Head of Marketing in the US asked me a few questions to reflect on the event and I was happy to share:

What was the most surprising part of TechCrunch Mobility 2020?

A digital event truly felt intimate and inspiring! In these unprecedented times, it becomes hard to find a new normal. In preparing for the event, it occurred to me that I hadn’t seen my dry cleaner in months, and wanted to hug her after getting my coat jacket cleaned for the presentation but couldn’t. Times are hard but it was refreshing to be amongst true change makers in the mobility space and to be able to connect on a unifying topic – the future of how we work, live and travel.

What were some of the most exciting things to come out of the event?

Autonomous cars and drones were hot on the list of big hitters for the event! We had the pleasure of giving our keynote right before Waymo, which was one of my favorite presentations discussing their progress with their autonomous product and fleet. We know that autonomy will have a significant impact on the utilization of passenger and fleet vehicles, with the question moving to “how” and not “if,” and so it was great to hear the various perspectives on the topic. Today’s vehicle data will help inform its path to mainstream availability and use.

'Data is essential. We have the largest set of connected vehicle data, and alongside our analytics capabilities, our products can truly change the way the entire industry operates'

How did Wejo better understand its place in the overall mobility landscape as a result of the event?

Particularly at this moment, we know data is essential, especially to understand the future of how we get from point A to point B. Directly after my keynote presentation, we heard from a lot of global mobility companies that wanted to discuss collaboration opportunities. We know we have the largest set of connected vehicle data, and alongside our analytics capabilities, our products can truly change the way the entire industry operates.

You talked about Connected, Autonomous, Shared and Electric as the pillars of the future of mobility. Can you share more about the role Wejo plays in the changing automotive industry?

The automotive industry is undergoing the largest change in over 100 years. These various verticals are impacting the way people move, and the modes of transportation that they use to move around their city or given area. What will tie it all together is vehicle connectivity, now very likely to become the norm as it has for other consumer products. While the automobile industry has not yet standardized its approaches to connecting its fleets, we act as a standardizing agent and broker for all of the companies that use their data downstream. And our analytical products allow organizations to take advantage of the insights from the data without needing in-depth data experience. This can be true for the public and private sectors.

What is the future of Wejo within the mobility space?

Connected car data is the most accurate source of mobility data, compared to that of mobile phone data or other infrastructure. We know this. We look forward to continuing to work with cities, data companies and governments of the like to truly make an impact on the way people travel in the United States today. We hope to expand to other countries soon with some additional automotive partnerships, but for now our product focuses on the US with over 95 percent road coverage and we are producing a ton of insights from construction zones, to hurricane evacuations to real-time traffic insights.
